Method 1: Using Device Manager

This method is quick and works well if you want a temporary or reversible solution.

Step 1: Open Device Manager

  1. Press Windows + X and select Device Manager from the menu.

  2. Alternatively, type Device Manager in the Start menu search bar and open it.

Step 2: Locate the Keyboard

  1. Expand the Keyboards category in the Device Manager.

  2. You should see a list of connected keyboards, including your laptop's built-in keyboard (e.g., “Standard PS/2 Keyboard”).

Step 3: Disable the Keyboard

  1. Right-click on the laptop's built-in keyboard entry.

  2. Select Disable device from the menu.

  3. If the "Disable" option is unavailable, uninstall the driver by selecting Uninstall device. This disables the keyboard until Windows reinstalls the driver during a reboot.

Step 4: Confirm Changes

  1. Click Yes or OK when prompted to confirm the action.

  2. The keyboard should now be disabled.

Method 2: Disabling the Mouse (Touchpad)

Step 1: Open Device Manager

  1. Follow the same process as above to open Device Manager.

Step 2: Locate the Mouse

  1. Expand the Mice and other pointing devices category.

  2. Identify the touchpad entry (e.g., “Synaptics Touchpad” or “HID-compliant mouse”).

Step 3: Disable the Touchpad

  1. Right-click on the touchpad device entry.

  2. Select Disable device from the menu.

  3. If unavailable, uninstall the driver by selecting Uninstall device.

Step 4: Confirm Changes

  1. Click Yes or OK to confirm the action.

  2. The touchpad will now be disabled.

Method 3: Using Control Panel (Touchpad Only)

If you only want to disable the touchpad, many laptops offer built-in software to manage this feature.

Step 1: Open Control Panel

  1. Press Windows + R, type control panel, and press Enter.

  2. Navigate to Hardware and Sound > Mouse.

Step 2: Disable Touchpad

  1. In the Mouse settings, locate the touchpad-specific tab (e.g., Device Settings or Touchpad).

  2. Select the touchpad and click Disable.

Tips for External Devices

If you're disabling the built-in keyboard and touchpad to use external devices:

  • Ensure your external keyboard and mouse are properly connected and working.

  • Test their functionality before disabling built-in components.
